Aamir Khan is known to do one film per year and there was no doubt Dangal will be another blockbuster for him but that it would be a knockout was a major surprise.

Dangal is the true story of Indian wrestler Mahavir Phogat and his two daughters Geeta and Babita who claimed India’s highest accolades in the sport that was underestimated by the country’s own.

Director Nitesh Tiwari brought this story to life with intelligence and patience. He did not care about song, dance or melodrama, he told a story like it was. And when you have an actor like Aamir you can make him do anything. Each role player had a finely combed character and because of their personal strength as capable actors they brought the feel of the struggles, tears of triumph or the innocence of winning in their performance.

Newcomers Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra do not need a “Sanam Re” type of film to launch their careers, they are almost like Madhuri Dixit getting a break in a Subash Ghai’s Khal Nayak.

Favourite scene is the fight between father and daughter and how an overweight Mahavir is struggling to find his pride. The film drops important messages, from pride with a girl child, to the importance of sports and the value of sports players in India. How much change will happen, only time will tell.

Music was suitable for the local plot and it is refreshing to see that the glamour quotient is disappearing and story is the main selling point. Director Nitesh Tiwari missed the point in Chillar Party and Bhootnath Returns but he is back with a big blockbuster and has shown his strength in getting the best out of child actors.
