Gifted Film

Captain America is always busy saving the world but what if he needed the saving himself? Chris Evans (Captain America) settles in comfortably in the role of Uncle Frank in the film Gifted directed by Marc Webb who is known for making the Amazing Spiderman films.

Gifted is the story about a very talented and genius niece Mary who is being protected by her uncle, such that he does not want her to go to a regular school, get discovered and sent to a “lab type school” and loose her sanity because her mother committed suicide for being a genius who was on the verge of cracking a Maths problem.

Frank and Mary are supported in this scheme by their neighbor Roberta Taylor and it is when Mary’s maternal Grandmother Evelyn comes over to complete her daughter’s Maths problem that a court case ensues.

Chris Evans is handsome and looks very sweet as the troubled brother, uncle and son. Octavia Spencer is wonderful as Roberta and while Lindsay Duncan looks perfect as the quintessential grandma, it is Mckenna Grace who steals the show as Mary. Jenny Slate who is famous for her TV Series House of Lies lends a supportive hand as Mary’s teacher.

This beautiful and heartwarming story is just that, beautiful.

The Shack

The Shack is based on the novel by the same name, written by William P Young and has sold over 10 million copies worldwide.

Stuart Hazeldine has directed the film and this is his biggest venture so far. The film stars the Avatar hero Sam Worthington as Mackenzie Phillips and his wife is Radha Mitchell, they are supported by Octavia Spencer as the Papa, Aviv Alush as Jesus and Sumire as Sarayu the spirit.

The story is about Mackenzie Phillips, an abused child by his father and mother, who meets “Papa” (the Holy Father) played by Octavia Spencer, and his life turns for the positive. Later we meet Mackenzie happily married to Nan and they have three children. Mack is taking the children to a camping trip, where his youngest daughter Missy is abducted and brutally murdered. The family is not able to reconcile with this loss and tragedy.

Mack gets a mysterious note one morning, signed by “Papa” to meet at the same Shack where Missy was killed. Mack goes there and meets Jesus, who guides him to wonderful lake house and he meets the Holy Spirit and Papa. The healing begins.

This interesting journey is magical, sad and happy too. It is a story worth exploring, that what if you could really have that conversation with God how would it be and what would you say?

The fact that Papa or God is female, Octavia Spencer, Jesus is Israeli, Avraham Aviv Alush and the Holy Spirit is Japanese, Sumire should signal an unusual yet pleasant possible reality.

The Shack belongs to Mack’s inner conflict and Sam Worthington does not let you down. Go on, take on a new spiritual journey.
